Polygamy in Tajikistan
A New York Times article by Ilan Greenburg reports that polygamy in Tajikistan is on the rise.
“The revival in Tajikistan of polygamy — which has been outlawed by the government but is supported by many imams — underscores a surprisingly swift return to traditional cultural and religious practices in all the former Soviet republics of Central Asia.”
I am not sure if I like this, but I am not surprised either. The Tajiks I know of aren’t exactly monogamous. The ones I knew of would look for a wife in NYC proclaiming she was the love of his life while supporting a wife back in Samarkand. Too much drama for me! Sometimes I wished there could be another wife so she could do all of the housework!! (I am joking of course) Like that Chinese movie Raise the Red Lantern. I would be Number One wife!! Ha Ha! Number Two wife, go do the dishes while I go shopping!(again joking) Of course, in reality, I could never support a polygamous marriage. Too jealous.
