I haven’t been able to blog much because I have been so busy. My husband is still out of work so I have to work hard to save money and keep the home organized. That is a full time job. Making foods homemade, planning menus, organizing the pantry, washing and air drying the clothes. After air drying clothes, I have to iron some of the clothing so that it is not so stiff. Because no income is coming in, I can’t buy instant food. I am busy all day. If I had a yard I would garden. I know I could plant one on my patio, but I would have to buy all of the materials. I always wondered how my father raised five children while unemployed for 6 months without government help. I realize now how hard my mother worked. Making savings and one income stretch is a full time job. My in-laws from Uzbekistan are masters of making a small income stretch and they taught me a few tips. In fact, I always thought that my mother-in-law teaching Americans how to be cheap would be a great idea for a reality show.
My mother-in-law makes everything home made. She makes french fries, fried chicken, spaghetti, fried fish, pancakes, everything from scratch. She makes a lot of salads and snacks on raisins and nuts. No potato chips! She makes meat stretch by putting it in dumplings like chuchavara or samsa or in stews and plov. My husband told me that when a certain fruit or vegetable was in season, she would buy extra and put the extras in jams or can them. She doesn’t believe in air conditioning or central heat. She rarely buys clothing and never runs the washing machine, dryer, or dish washer. She washes everything by hand. For entertainment, she takes the children on walks. Also, the library and the public park is always free! Eating out in restaurants is a luxury. She doesn’t like disposible diapers and never uses wipees. She uses a washcloth and then rinses the baby’s behind in the sink.
I know that some Americans (especially Mormons) live this way too. Maybe if more of us live this way, we would be in less debt and would have a happier life overall. We would be free! I am not the best when it comes to provident living. I am making some changes and already seeing the results. My Uzbek mother-in-law gave me some great ideas and taught me that SOMETIMES the simple way is better. I can take some of her advice but keep some luxuries like my dishwasher and use the dryer for sheets and underwear. It is possible to be a hosewife on a small income! I know my sister-in-law (who is not Uzbek, but Canadian) can give me some even better advice. (She is the most frugal person I know and really should write a book!)
Ok, back to Central Asia.
Journalists are still facing danger and arrest in Uzbekistan. Currently journalist Umida Niyazova is on trial for doing reasearch in Andijon. She was interviewing witnesses in Kyrgyzstan. She has been in jail since late January. She is a single mother of a 2 year old.
Except for Iraq which is in the middle of war, Russia and other former Soviet Republics are the most dangerous places for journalists.

This is a response. A commenter misunderstood what I wrote. I am not the best writer so I understand why people may misunderstand me.
Let me try to clarify. Maybe I am ready for our culture to rise above merely having the freedom to express. People express themselves way too much without enough reason. Maybe I am ready for people to be responsible for what they express. We have paid a huge cost for people expressing themselves. Look what happened when someone took that freedom too far in Virginia. People expressing themselves without thought or reason are narcissists. Our culture is filled with narcissists. I think you focused on one paragraph of my post and ignored the rest.
In other words, people like Rosie O’Donnell should be thankful that they live in a time where they don’t have to be a peasant. She can be an artistic person and run her mouth all she wants. She doesn’t even half to get married to a man in order to have children. She has her girlfriend and she is a loving mother. She should be the happiest person. She has what she wants. Why the hate? Why does she say that oppressive Iranians are better than freedom loving Christians? Those Protestant Christians gave her that freedom to run her mouth. This hatred of Western Culture has gone on for the past 150 years. (By Westerners themselves) Time for a change. Can we have freedom and equality and beauty and respect at the same time? That is all I am trying to say.
Do you understand now? Believe or not, what I am saying is not unusual and certainly not proof that my life is miserable. I have what I want.
I no longer believe that our culture is dying. It justs needs another rebirth.
