Fifth Generation

Life is always been difficult, a struggle. There has always been death, disease, and poverty. There have always been those who seem to unfairly have it all, and those who don’t seem to deserve their trials and tribulations.

It is a mistake, however, for man to try to end all unhappiness and try to bring forth a “millenium” or a “new age” or a “new world order”.  The attempts only cause more chaos and do indeed lead to the end of civilization. Civilization dies only through its suicide.  It is society’s  “intellectual elite” who are responsible for delivering the shot.

The intellectuals noticed that life was difficult. There is poverty, war, and greed. Any Spiritual person from a Jew, to a Christian, to a Buddhist could tell you there is suffering in this life and there will always be. Suffering is part of growing and maturity. For Mormons, suffering is absolutely essential and taking that away from someone is taking away their freedom from happiness as without suffering there is no joy. However, these intellectuals wanted to solve the problem of suffering once and for all. They took away God and attempted to become gods themselves. Again, we have people who have become too great in society trying to build their own Tower of Babel to God.

Nineteenth century intellectuals blamed capitalism for suffering and wanted to take the choice of suffering away from mankind by instituting Socialism. There were many, but Karl Marx stands out as the most famous example. Capitalism just wouldn’t die, and still hasn’t. In fact, it is still giving people choice and opportunity to succeed; socialism takes that choice away. The bourgeoisie continued on as does poverty, illness, racism, and war.

Intellectuals began to believe that mankind naturally was becoming degenerate. Social Darwinism, Anthropolocial Anthropology, and Eugenics were considered real science in its day and popular among politicians as a way to control behavior. The birth control movement, abortion movement, as well as the Holocaust and forced sterilizations under the Nazi regime were the result of this “science”. Many people lost their liberty and their lives.

There were many other such movements like Leninism, Maoism, Feminism, Sexual Revolution, and Gramscism that tried to end suffering and ended up taking away more freedom and bringing more sadness and hatred in the world. I blame these intellectuals for the current Islamic Terrorism. Men strapping bombs on themselves, blowing themselves up and taking innocents with them was used by Russian radicals long before the Palestinians used the tactic against the Israelis.

Over and over these attempts of trying to be God fail. Today the movement is just as anti- Capitalist, racist, and dangerous but now scream under the banner of “GLOBAL WARMING”.  Man is now destroying the Earth and will soon cause the apocalypse.  Of course, in order the save the world and make it more “green friendly” they must take away our freedoms and blame the most horrible enemy - CAPITALISM.

Take out God, then all you have left is historical and cultural pessimism. Man attempts to bring about its own New World Order, or Golden Age only causing more harm and suffering for the rest of us. They will take away suffering by taking away any chance for happiness by taking away our need for work, family, and progress.

It is time for a revolution to spin the other direction.

Yesterday I saw the HBO documentary, “To Die in Jerusalem”. The documentary tells the story of the mother of a suicide bomber, Ayat, who kills Rachel Levy in a Jerusalem supermarket in 2002. This story made the cover of Newsweek as the killer Ayat and Rachel are almost the same age and look similar.

The movie follows Avigail Levy, an Israeli who lived for a time in the USA, who wants to meet the mother of Ayat to gain understanding. She wants to know if Ayat’s mother, Um Samir, really knew her daughter was going to blow herself up. If not, she wants to know if the mother really supported her daughter’s suicide.

The documentary shows the grief of Avigail in detail and shares pictures and memories of her daughter Rachel. Um Samir has moments of grief and emotion, but cannot get out of victim mode. She lives in a land that is under Palestinian authority, yet all she can think about is wanting her home in Jaffa and wanting Muslims to pray in Al- Aqsa mosque. Paintings and pictures of suicide murderers or “martyrs” are painted all over the walls near Ayat’s family. Even Ayat’s face is painted all over Bethlehem as a martyr.

I really got to understand the mothers of these girls. However, I would like to learn more about Rachel and Ayat. Rachel wanted to be famous in Israel. Ayat always wanted to be the best at everything she did. She always wanted to have the highest score in class and was engaged to be married. I wonder what Ayat thought of as she entered the supermarket ready to push the button to her death. Right before pushing the button a girl turns around, Jewish and unveiled, and who looks exactly like her.

Ayat lived in a death hate culture. She was oppressed in her land politically and socially. She had to do what was expected of her. She had to be wife, mother, and she had to hate Jews. Martyrs of those who killed themselves for the cause and took innocents with them were painted on the walls as heroes. Parents who held their babies in front of Israeli guns were also highly revered. Ayat witnessed a man holding a baby in front of the Israeli army shortly before she died. One of the last pictures of her is one of her holding up a gun. She wanted to be a martyr.

The “meeting” of Ayat’s mother and Rachel’s mother represents the conflict itself. There is the Israeli mother pleading for communication and understanding. The Palestinian mother is screaming nothing but hatred and victimhood. She never denounces the violence her daughter took part of. Why not, her daughter achieved the highest achievement in the Palestinian culture.

The documentary ended with no conclusion, just like the real Israeli conflict.
