Right now we live in one of the most priciest areas, the Washington D.C. metro area. Housing prices are dropping all over the place so we decided to look at homes in Alexandria. We found homes under $250,000. Of course we were tempted! However, we discovered that the property taxes are over $4,000 for some homes, plus we would have to pay home insurance. We would still pay way more than the cost of renting. We pay $1400 a month for a townhome currently. We don’t want to go over $2000 a month. At this time that seems impossible. With housing prices dropping we would lose money in the end. Right now $250,000 will get you a townhouse or a very old “fixer upper” home with almost no land.
Well, today I read an article at MSN.com where it lists 34 cities where it is cheaper to rent than to buy a home. Washington D.C. is number 12. (includes Northern Virginia) Interestingly Salt Lake City is also on the list. Atlanta is on the list of places where buying makes more sense. I remember that well! It was so expensive to rent an apartment there, while houses were so cheap. Even as a single woman, I was tempted to buy in Atlanta. Chattanooga and Birmingham are also on the list. The less government control you have in an area, the better chance you have to own property and be free. I also noticed that Richmond, VA is on the list. Since my husband is gone a lot anyways, maybe I should look South for homes away from the city.
I like being close to D.C., but the cost is not worth it. Prince William county is ok, but the other counties around D.C. tend to be more liberal which means, power to the rich, screw the rest. Yes, that is right! The rich make more money. The poor are paid off to be mere serfs and are lied to as the rich take more and more of their freedoms, including access to better education (an educated peasant is a scary thing after all!) and the Middle class (the evil Middle Class!!) are taxed out of any chance of success.
“I, your master government, will provide my poor serfs free medicine while those who are more worthy than you, who went to Harvard and Yale, get to pay for better doctors elsewhere. I your master government, believe that you should stay victims of a hatred of something that happened 150 years ago so that you may never be part of the Middle Class and defy me, your master government. Bow to me and see what I can provide for you. Pay for this with your guns and your land the two examples of the free man and cheer for the master government in your miserable shacks that I provided for you. Only those who serve the most high government may receive the wealth of a home with an air conditioner and those who march for serfdom receive a car from the master government. Believe my lies and I will give you mediocre medicine. Chant for me and I will take away your gods. We will all be one united in the Hell of the state! Hooray, to the master government, let me scan your identification number and receive your chicken to go in your pot.”
The house we are trying to buy would be $900 a month with mortgage payments, insurance and taxes. The average 3 bedroom home is $1,200 a month for rent in Provo!
My sister and her husband are looking into buying a house in Brooklyn. $500K for a 3 bedroom house that is very similar to the Skyline house! That’s half a million dollars! You could buy a mansion with that amount of money here!
Small old houses in downtown Vancouver are close to a million dollars!
$500,000 can get you the same here in certain neighborhoods.
