I finally have a copy of a picture of my great great grandfather, Marshall Daniel Majors. He was born in 1845 in Marion County, Georgia and died in 1932 in Alabama and is buried in Ripley, Tennessee. This is a copy of the original picture that is in the possession of my father.

Trip to Annapolis

Posted on November 17th, 2008 in Genealogy, Watkins, Maryland by Ambar

I went to Annapolis last Tuesday and had a wonderful time! Annapolis is a beautiful city on the Chesapeake Bay. It also has a lot of history, including my family history. My Watkins side comes from that area. I am related to the Gassaways, Chews, Burgesses, Watkins, Ridgely’s, and maybe the Howards. I see their names everywhere. I went to St. Paul’s church and found a few gravestones. Some of those buried were related through marriage. There was one Gassaway, but at this time we can’t find a connection. He was a Nicholas Gassaway, son of Captain Nicholas Gassaway who died in 1699. We cannot find this Nicholas Gassaway. I have also seen it transcribed as Thomas Gassaway.

Annapolis is the home of one of my brick walls. My 4th great grandfather was Thomas Spencer Watkins. We know his parents were Joseph Watkins and Ann Brown. We don’t know who Ann Brown’s parents are. She was orphaned as a small child and a Rev. Archibald Spencer took care of her. When he died Ann Brown inherited most of his estate. So was Ann Brown’s mother’s maiden name Spencer? She named her sons Thomas Spencer Watkins and another Archibald Washington Watkins. Thomas Spencer Watkins was born in 1769 in Anne Arundel County Maryland. Archibald Washington Watkins was born in 1778. Their other children were Margaret (1765), named for her paternal grandmother Margaret Lamb, John Watkins (1767), Martha Ann (1771), Joseph (1776), Gassaway (1781), and Richard (1797). There is ancestor John Lamb and John Watkins who married Ann Gassaway.  There are no Richards. Is Richard from the maternal line? There is a Thomas Spencer and a William Brown mentioned in several documents in Ann Arundel County. It is still a mystery.

Politics in the Family

Posted on November 2nd, 2008 in Genealogy by Ambar

Since Election Day is coming soon, I will write about a few politicians we have in our family. Being involved in our communities in an old family tradition that I honestly have not kept up. I don’t have any world famous politicians in my family in recent history, but many who have served their local communities.

My father’s family have a tradition of getting involved in politics. I don’t know much about my mother’s family’s political activities. My mother’s family were pioneers and were some of the first families to come to Tennessee. They were worried about survival. She had on one line ancestors who were against slavery and fought for the North during the Civil War and a distant cousin was shot because of his beliefs. She is the descendent of Alexander Boyer who worked for the Dutch government during the late 17th century. He settled in Delaware and could speak several languages. I need to research further my mother’s family’s political heritage.

My father’s side has always been known to be actively involved in politics. My great- grandfather Joseph Magruder Tucker was the mayor of Ripley, TN in the 1940s. He also served on the city council and was an alderman. I am sure he was a Democrat. My father has several ancestors who served in the House of Burgesses in Virginia and were involved in politics in Maryland. A distant cousin married a daughter of a member of Congress. On the Lumpkin side, his ancestor’s brother was the first governor of Georgia. He is also more distantly related to a few members of Congress and governors of Maryland. He is a distant cousin to the Alabama senator Howell Heflin. He might be related to Andrew Jackson but that hasn’t been proven.  My aunt did lobbying work and knew Tipper Gore. My grandfather, always a Republican, was not impressed. There is a story that my grandmother met Al Gore Sr, but I don’t remember the details.

My family, being from the South, were usually Democrat. My grandparents were the exception. Charles Lee Sr. was always a Republican and didn’t even support FDR. My grandmother, Frances Tucker Lee, became a Republican later in life. My mother’s parents became Republicans as well. They are younger than my dad’s parents but as far as I know they were brought up to love FDR. My great- grandmother, Mildred Warren Johnson, was a huge fan of FDR and supported the Democrat ticket the rest of her life.  I believe most of my family changed to the Republican party because they did not like the radicals taking over the Democrat party.
