Albert’s children- Texas (1851), Mariah (1853), Sam (1861), John (1864), Arthur (1865), Wiley (1868), and Tempsey (1870) all born in Spalding County, Georgia. Wiley Heflin

January 16th, 2009 Amber 1 comment

I am currently doing research on Wiley Heflin. I am descended from him two different ways: through his daughter Elizabeth and his son Wyatt. Add or correct information in the comments. I want to learn what I can! This is his life backwards-

From the Heflin Family Cemetery “near Griffin. . . on the Jenkinsburg Rd. a few hundred yards from the Butts Co. line and the Towaliga River” (from www.kendawg.net)

Wiley Heflin
was born May 1772
Died April 15, 1835
He was a member of the Baptist Church about 30 years

1833- Daughter Susannah marries John W. Driskell (Probably the son of Nancy Betts Driskell Thomason whose daughter Lucinda marries Wyatt Heflin in 1836)

His will was written 17 Oct 1832 Henry County, Georgia Will Book A, 1834-1867 p. 10-11. He mentions: his wife Hannah, son Cyrus D. Heflin, Elizabeth Patrick, Johnson Heflin, Gilly Heflin (received land in Dekalb County and had three children out of wedlock supposedly with Elizabeth Patrick’s husband), Wiley J. Heflin, Wyatt Heflin, Temperence Henley, daughter Susanah, daughter Sarah. Wiley J. and Wyatt were executors. Wit: Thomas Fincher,John Parham, and Moses Boggess (his brother-in-law)

1830 Census- Henry County, Georgia

10 Dec 1828- Daughter Temperence marries Jesse Henley in Henry County, Georgia

29 Nov 1927- Wiley J. married Mary Parker in Henry County, Georgia

1823- Johnson Heflin marries his first cousin Elizabeth Rhodes in Henry County, Georgia

1822- Lot 70 2nd District, Henry County, Wiley buys from Cornelius Taylor for $400. This comes from the Georgia Genealogical Magazine 1970 p. 122. Wiley settles in Henry County in 1822 according to Henry County History and an obituary of one of Wiley Heflin’s descendants. Wiley is one of the first settlers of Henry County and his land is near the Towaliga River. His land is now in Spalding County.

1820- Census Wiley is in Walton County, Georgia. Daughter Sarah is born

14 Feb 1818- Daughter Elizabeth marries Luke Patrick in Jackson County, Georgia

1815- Daughter Susannah is born, county unknown, I don’t know where Wiley is at this point

1814- Daughter Temperance is born. I still do not know which county

1812- Wiley serves in the War of 1812

1811- Son Wyatt is born in an unknown county (Morgan?)

31 Dec 1811- Wiley’s younger brother Wyatt marries Sarah Stell in Morgan County, he has lived with Wiley since he was 12

1808- Wiley J is born in an unknown county

1807- Gilly is born in an unknown county (maybe Warren? Wiley Heflin is probably no longer in Greene County)

1805- Johnson is born in possibly Greene County, Georgia

1805- Wiley’s brother James (some say father) is on the Warren County Tax List with 183 acres and 5 slaves

30 Dec 1805- Greene County, Wiley’s brother James marries Nancy Thurman

04 Mar 1804- Wiley Heflin sells James Watson (his brother-in-law) 50 acres in Greene County, Georgia. (Deed Book BB p. 145)

1804- Greene County- JAmes Watson marries Wiley’s sister, Temperence Heflin

13 Apr 1803- Elizabeth is born in either Greene or Oglethorpe County Georgia

03 Jan 1803- Wiley Heflin witnesses a deed from James Heflin to Douglas Watson in Warren County, Georgia (Deed Book AA p. 592)

09 Feb 1802- Greene County- a James Heflin marries a Sarah Wynn

02 Jan 1802- Wiley Heflin witnesses a deed between James Watson and William Booker in Greene County (Deed Book AA p. 653)

1802- Wiley’s father James dies around this time. According to a letter by Wiley’s niece, Wiley’s 12 year old brother Wyatt comes to live with him. A baptist preacher named James Heflin dies around this time according to the book, Georgia Baptists, by Jesse Harrison Campbell.  In the book a Mercer takes over the congregation in Greene County, Georgia probably at Whatley’s Mill Baptist Church from a Mr. Heflin. Mercer takes over sometimes around 1802. Mr. Heflin is described as “old” and is from North Carolina. Partof the book is blocked on Google Books. A Thomas Stokes, who went to church in Greene County at this time remembers- “. . .when I was twelve years old- an old Brother Heflin. He was then the pastor of Shiloh Church not far from where Penfield is now located. He preached monthly.  At least half of the congregation walked to church. I have seen thirty to forty rifles brought to church, and when preaching commenced the men stood sentry for fear of the Indian, till the services closed. It is my recollection that Mr. Heflin was a model preacher. He continued in charge there until his death, fter which Mercer, Marshall, and Matthews visited the church. ” (Campbell, Georgia Baptists p.354) Thomas Stokes was born in 1786 so this would have happened in 1798.

03 Nov 1800- Wiley Heflin marries Hannah Boggess in Oglethorpe County, Georgia

1800 Georgia Census Jeremiah Boggess lives in Oglethorpe County in Captain Duke’s district near Long Creek and Dry Fork Creek

1800 North Carolina- Wake County, a younger James Heflin around 16- 24 (18?) with another male 16-24 a female under 10 and another female 16-26, this is probaby another Heflin

1799- Greene County- James Malone sells to James Heflin of Greene County 276 acres of land for $750. (Deed Book P p.49)

1795- Orange County, North Carolina, Wiley’s sister Abigail “Guella” marries Samuel Rhodes one of their daughters, Elizabeth, marries Wiley’s sons and another, Nancy marries Daniel Griffin.

1789- Wiley’s brother Wyatt is born in North Carolina according to the 1850 census. Temperance was born not long before.

1784- Wiley’s sister (?) Sally marries James Holt, they later have  son named Wiley Holt.

1782- Wiley’s brother James is born in North Carolina

1779- Abigail or Guella, Wiley’s sister is born in North Carolina

1772- Wiley is born in North Carolina. I cannot find a date for Sally’s birth. If that is her marriage date then according to the date of 1775, she would have been nine when she was married so either that is not Wiley’s Sally or Sally was born around 1771-1773.

I have written that Wiley was born in Granville County, North Carolina, but at this time I cannot prove it.  At some point the family moved to Orange County, North Carolina before going to Georgia. I do not have the date they went to Georgia at this time. A letter written by Wiley’s niece says that James Heflin was born in England and married a Bethania Davis in North Carolina. His father was Joab Heflin who never came to America.
