Washing Dishes in her Fur and Pearls

One of my favorite housewife stories comes from my grandmother’s autobiography.

My grandmother’s mother died when she was five. Her family was not poor and did not struggle. Her family had a nanny and servants which were cheaper to have in those days. Reading her autobiography, she didn’t mention many women as she didn’t have her mother. She loved the lady who raised her and most of all she loved her daddy. The only other woman I remember her mentioning was an aunt (or was it cousin, I’ll have to ask my mother) who was so wealthy that she did the dishes wearing a white fur and pearls. My grandmother never became that wealthy, but I am sure she always looked at that memory as a distant dream of her own.

What is your favorite housewife story from your family?
