25 Cents Forward

I finally took the kids to the Louisville Downtown Library one hot day. Since I knew we would have to pay for parking I took three dimes to pay the meters so that I could have enough time to break a dollar. After driving around we finally found the parking lot. I put the three dimes i, but the parking meter did not register anything. I began to panic and asked the lady next to me if hers worked. She told me that hers worked fine. I then noticed a small sticker on the meter that said that it only accepted quarters. I asked the lady if she had change for a dollar. I then tried to plan in my head how I would drag three kids across the street into the library and get change for a dollar before I got a ticket. The lady said, I have an extra quarter, you can have it. She then popped the quarter into the meter before I could say anything. The meter registered 30 minutes.

I thanked the lady and stopped panicking. As she walked away, I said a little prayer thanking God that this lady did something nice for me. I tend to believe that whenever someone gives you a compliment or does something nice for you, that is a compliment or help from God. I then in my heart asked God if I could be his instrument and do something like that lady did for me for someone else.

I dragged the kids across the street and around the block to the entrance and finally to the front desk of the library while my kids fussed and screamed because they were hot. I got change for a dollar and walked all the way back to the parking lot and out two quarters in. It took me almost 20 minutes to get change.

The kids and I walked around the library. I took more notice of people trying to find a way to pay the kindness I received before forward. However, as I was the one dragging three children, people were being kind to me. I always smiled and thank the people and tried to keep my kids quiet. It was finally time to go and we walked out of the entrance around the corner and across the street. I thought briefly that I was unable to help anyone. Maybe there was someone needy I didn’t notice?

I got to the car and noticed that there were 30 minutes left on the meter. I saw someone driving throught the parking lot looking for a parking space. I stopped her and said, “I have 30 minutes left on my meter, you can have my space.”  I then quietly prayed in my heart thanking God for the opportunity.
