Open House
Last night I went to Victoria’s Open House. The first hour was pretty boring so I am glad that I did not take the kids. We got the PTA speech twice. I can’t join PTA this year because we might move anyway. I go to the PTA activities and try to support them because I remember when I was a teacher how the PTA helped me. I just can’t join this year. I feel like I cannot connect to any community right now. I just want to move and settle down somewhere else for a while.
Well, finally the exciting part of Open House began and I went to Victoria’s class to see what she has been doing for the year. She made me a little welcome bag and a book about herself. I also saw her journals. I was pretty impressed. She is going to a science lab and studying the parts of a goldfish. She colored a diagram and had the parts labeled. Most of their day is devoted to reading. I wish they studied Math more. I remember meeting this 4 year old who went to a Russian private pre-school who was already doing addition and subtraction. I am teaching Victoria Math at home because I feel that American Public schools realy do not prepare students well in useful subjects like Math and Science. The reading program in her school is wonderful however. She is also taking Chinese and is quickly learning Chinese phrases and hanza. I am really impressed. Overall, I love the school Victoria is going to. When we do move I hope to find a school that is on the same level. If not, I can always teach her what I want her to know at home.
