Geography Genius
Someone posted this video on my facebook of 23 month old geography genius. I figured if a 23 month old can learn geography why not a three or five year old. So now as a family project we are learning the countries of the world. So far we learned North and Central America. Not only do the kids memorize where the countries are, but we learn a little about each of the countries. We look at each of them on Google Earth and then watch travel videos about each country. I learn about the countries as well.
Jon Jon loves Greenland because of the ice and Belize because of the snorkeling videos. Victoria liked watching a video about the Panama Canal and El Salvador. I liked to see the ancient Mayan ruins and tried to find them on Google Earth. Aron thinks everything is “cool”.
I learned from teachers that I worked with to never dumb things down for children. They can learn a lot more than you think. It is so much more fun too!
They may not remember where every country is, but they should know the basics. Plus there are a lot more countries than when I was a child. I remember how easy it was to remember the USSR. Now we have to learn all those break away republics.
We will also learn the states of the USA. My mother taught us using puzzle maps. I think I will try that too.
