Scripture Study

Thursday 10th January 2008 - 10:58:00 AM

They say that after you do something 15 times it becomes a habit. Scripture reading has become long become a daily habit for me. However, I want to make it a little more challenging for myself and my family.

I read a chapter. Then in my head a ponder over what I just read and try to apply it to my life. Then I pick a scripture that jumps out at me and memorize it for the day. This has made scripture study a little more useful and made it more than just a habit.

Family scripture study has also become a habit, even though it was more of a challenge. We are reading the Old Testament now. Because of the children, I skip genealogies and detailed laws. I try to read about ten verses. Afterwards I summerize the verses to make sure the kids understand what I read. I even explain some of the vocabulary to them. Then I pick out a verse that stands out and I read it and have the kids repeat what I say. After that we work on a verse that we had been memorizing for the month. In December, we recited 1 Kings 19:11-12. (which we heard in the movie, The Nativity Story) In January, we are reciting Ecclesiastes 3:1. Yes, I sing it! Not only am I picking out scriptures that are spiritua, but ones that have cultural relevance since we now live in a secular world. This secular world is cutting us off from our cultural background to the point that many cannot understand our own literature and history. So reading the Bible is important if you are a Westerner, even if you are an atheist if you want to understand your Western culture and heritage.

These steps have helped me and my family have better a  scripture study and makes it more fun and challenging.
