Hairspray
I loved the original 1988 version of Hairspray which was a very campy movie full of interesting people like Rikki Lake, Deborah Harry, Ric Ocasek, Sonny Bono and of course the wonderful Divine! I loved Divine’s performance in the original movie and that is part of the reason why Hairspray is one of my favorite movies. I love the campy and weird.
So I was a bit nervous when the new version of Hairspray, this time more based on the musical came out. I was especially nervous about John Travolta playing Edna Turnblad. However, I kept hearing wonderful reviews. So I finally watched it on DVD and I enjoyed it. John Travolta is no Divine but I loved Nikki Blonsky as Tracey Turnblad. I loved the music and found myself singing the music while washing dishes days later. I especially loved the “Good Morning Baltimore” and ” You Can’t Stop the Beat”. The most fun was the cameos of the original actors of the 1988 movie Hairspray.
Yeah, fun movie! Now I have more songs to sing when I do karaoke!!
